Six reasons French is a gift that lasts a lifetime

French is one of Canada's two official languages, and it is part of everyday life across the country, from cereal boxes and road signs to government services and the workplace. Giving your child a strong start in French opens doors that stay open for the rest of their life. Here's why it's worth the effort.

1. Success at school

Most Canadian students study French at school, and many families choose French immersion. Children who get extra practice outside the classroom tend to feel more confident, take part more in class and find each new grade easier.

2. A sharper, more flexible brain

Research on bilingual children suggests that switching between two languages helps build skills like attention, memory and problem solving. Young learners also find it easier to pick up the sounds and accent of a new language.

3. More career choices later

Many jobs in Canada ask for both English and French, including roles in the federal public service, health care, education, tourism and customer service. Being bilingual can make a young person's résumé stand out.

4. Connection with a wider world

French is spoken by millions of people around the world, in Quebec, New Brunswick and francophone communities across Canada, as well as in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Speaking French lets children make friends, travel and enjoy books, music and films from many cultures.

5. Confidence for newcomer families

For families who are new to Canada, learning French alongside English helps children feel at home in both official languages. It can also support parents' own goals, such as studying, working or immigration applications.

6. It's easier when you start young

Children are natural mimics. Starting early, even with songs, games and a few words a day, builds a foundation that makes formal learning much smoother as they grow.

How to give your child a head start

  • Make French fun at home with songs, stories and games.
  • Celebrate progress, not perfection.
  • Add regular practice with a teacher, such as a weekly live class.
  • Connect learning to real life: menus, signs, cartoons and calls with French-speaking friends.
